Consort bass viol
after Henry Jaye, Southwark 1621
This is a proper big bass viol as it was used for the lowest voice in the English consort. The original is in a private collection in France. It only came to public notice recently and had been converted to a cello. The instrument has been restored using information about neck and string lengths from the Talbot Manuscript and referring to the 1619 Jaye bass viol. It now has a string length of ca. 81 cm and is all gut strung.
Body length 76 cm, string length ca. 81 cm.
